about
I wrote this on the day that John Prine died. This has been a really difficult time for all of us in our own and collective ways. I hope this helps a little. I miss you and I can't wait to see you again when it's safe for all. Be good to yourself. XO, VJS
Thank you to Micah Schnabel for making the soundtrack to this piece.
lyrics
John Prine died today
And this house is full of our current ghosts
I've no place to go
Home isn't even an option anymore
I fill the 6 feet of social distance between us with enough self hate
I'm beyond cracked and I know I should go for a walk while the sun is out
Overloaded thinking there's not enough stories between me and the sidewalk
Rent on the top floor is so much more expensive
Too poor to die quickly
And the library books are long overdue
Awaiting good news from a long distance
I wake up early, search for sun spots, drink coffee and call my loved ones
I put them on speaker phone and pretend my heart is ok
I bake cakes layered with fresh fruit for no one
The birds no longer sing, the hammers are not hammering
All I can hear are a few imperfect melodic swishes of lockdown traffic humming all around me
No more airplanes in the sky
Helicopter enforcements hover because the good of humanity could never be agreed upon
There is no such thing as a fair fight
My fists clenched tight
I can’t trust my own shadow on quiet nights
My glasses are broken and I can’t see through the impending doom
I text my mom and tell her to lookup at the full moon
With a broken promise that I’ll be home soon

Micah is one of my favorite songwriters around, and also an all around gentleman and scholar. Both his solo work and his work with Two Cow Garage seem to work their way into my regular music rotation with ease. doug shaw
